Basketball 2016

Risk TakerI decided to try out for the basketball team as I had recently stopped playing football and I wanted to learn something new. I began playing basketball not thinking I would be any good at it, however with a lot of practice and help from the team I managed to improve so much as to be selected for the team. Although I was at first upset about stopping football I was so glad that I rerouted my energy into basketball as it is now one of my favourite sports. I had to be a risk taker to join the training knowing in my mind that I would not make the team.

BalancedBy joining the team I realised that I would have to balance my work and sport, as the training takes up a lot of time during a week. I started working before and after each training. By doing this I was able to keep up with school work as well as play sports.

ISSEA
On the 2nd of February the IST boys and girls basketball teams travelled to Johannesburg for the ISSEA tournament. By playing 3 other teams in our pool we won 2 and lost 1 meaning we were 2nd in our pool. We then lost our next game which would determine whether we could come 1st place or 5th. We finally came in 7th place however I dont think anyone in the team was really disappointed, as we played our best and became closer as a team. Although 5 team members will be graduation this year we hope to come back next year with a stronger and closer team.

Basketball 2017
December: Basketball began at quite a low point for me specifically because Ms. Cussen, our former coach had to stop training us due to an injury. We then switched coaches to Coach Dasse, who although was a good coach, the trainings from then on did not have the same pressure as they had done before. The team was cut to 15 people, however since Ms. Cussen was no longer training us an average of 6 people have been going to training. Although I have not been 100% committed myself, I was having to balance out my school work with the time taken by trainings. By the time the December break came around, 3 people had already quit.
January: After the break the quality of the trainings increased immensely. After I had had a conversation with Ms. Greenlaw about how it didnt feel as though people were very enthusiastic about ISSEA, including the coach, she went to talk to Mr. Tate and had a meeting about how it would be improved. Since ISSEA is in less than 3 weeks it was really important that at least now we could try and change the season around. We played about 12 games and had about 10 trainings, which really helped our play.
February:
The ISSEA competition which was held at IST went really well. Over all we came 5th, 2 places higher than last year! ISSEA was a really exciting event to be apart of. Although it was my last one, out of many, it was really a great event to be apart of and a nice get a way from IB. The team played really well together. Under Maya's leadership, together we played our bests. After each game we sat together and discussed what went well and what could improve for the next game. Using our reflective skills we all contributed to the play and how we could play better as a team.
